No Holds Barred, Mehwish Sattar's Entrepreneurial Spirit

Mehwish Abdul Sattar has a story to tell and thank goodness, she tells it all, the story of a young female in the business world of Pakistan. Her name is pronounced "Suttarr" not "Saddur" like I enunciated it in the beginning.

(Listen to our podcast interview in audio which is available on DIDX and iTunes.)

Interesting fact is that her masters is in Genetics, and look at where she is now ... like Erum Munir and Salma Navaid Jafri, she not only started her own company, but her company helps other people start their own companies.

A friend suggested that she switch to the IT industry. Her first job was an as SEO intern. Then she became a product manager in the same company.

Later she partnered with Pure BPO, a big company in Pakistan, and enjoyed her time. She shares the good and bad which is refreshing. She later told me that the other partners were really smart, and she will always appreciate them and respect them.

she started 3wOgle.com, 3w as in www- world wide web and "Ogle" is a german word means "Creative Vision" so she have a "creative vision on world wide", she has created jobs and employed ten people in her headquarters in Karachi, four more in Lahore, two in Islamabad, one in Georgia and have virtual representatives and employees in different part of the world and her baby 3wOgle is now 3wOgle Group of Companies. She is affiliated with 4 local and 7 international companies.

She thinks back to her own life when her father passed away when she was eight years old and her mother had to work even more to take care of the family. Mehwish started to help her mom in several ways and started teaching after completing her matriculation, so she can help her mom and can bear her education cost too. Now, as Mehwish is rewarded for all hard times she faced and due to her mom's and God's blessings, she is spending a great life.  She knows that there are others in Pakistan in the same boat. Mehwish wants to help the talented people who are having those problems to start their own business.

She started a program called SEO Media to help others do a great job assisting businesses get recognized for their great products and solutions and even ... work from home while doing this.

We discussed failure and how we dealt with failure in this podcast. Secondly we talked about another controversial subject ... starting a business, doing well, and then ... well, listen to find out.

Mehwish mentions my business partner and the other co-founder Rehan Allahwala's One Million Businesses program and the fact that she participates in all those events.

She realizes that even if her "graduates" outdo her in the industry, she knows she knows that her reputation just gets better for helping others to start businesses.

Next topic is how to help smart, honest people in developing areas to establish quickly a local presence in other areas of the world via virtual phone numbers.

I like the name of her website 3wogle ... http://www.3wogle.com.

We discuss Linkedin and its value. Connect with Mehwish and me on Linkedin, but I do recommend that if you use Linkedin, make sure you include a profile picture, use your real first name and last name at least, and when people write recommendations for you ... write one for them. :-D

Change is under way at ThinkBalm

Group: ThinkBalm Innovation Community
Subject: Change is under way at ThinkBalm
Hello, innovators.

At ThinkBalm we’ve had a couple of great years as industry analysts dedicated to covering work-related use of immersive technologies—an early-stage, emerging technology market. We have worked with some terrific people at great client organizations like Altadyn, BP, Chevron, Forterra Systems (now part of SAIC), Linden Lab, Moondus, ProtonMedia, Teleplace, and Tandem Learning. We’ve published nine comprehensive reports spanning market overview, business value, technology selection, barriers to adoption, and best practices—and made this research freely available via our Web site. We launched the ThinkBalm Innovation Community, grew it to more than 470 members, and hosted more than 35 facilitated work sessions, training sessions, and networking events. More than half of our research reports arose directly out of ThinkBalm Innovation Community activities.

We believe that mainstream adoption of immersive technologies in the workplace—virtual worlds, immersive learning environments, and virtual event platforms—is a matter of when, not if. But these technologies are still a new concept to most organizations and overall the barriers to adoption are quite high. In April, we modified our earlier prediction that we expected to reach the early majority adoption phase in 2013, to say we think it will take longer than this. One thing is clear: this emerging market does not yet require full-time, dedicated industry analysts to cover it.

In early July, Erica will be joining the marketing team at QlikView, a business intelligence software vendor. Sam will stay on with ThinkBalm for some time to work on client consulting engagements. We won’t be publishing any more general research, and plan to disband the ThinkBalm Innovation Community.

One of the greatest gifts of the past two years is the people we’ve met. The people who are working on Immersive Internet initiatives are innovators and free thinkers—truly a special breed. Thank you to all of you who have participated in ThinkBalm Innovation Community events and activities, and in ThinkBalm’s research.

You can find more details about our future plans in this ThinkBalm blog article: http://www.thinkbalm.com/2010/06/15/change-is-under-way-at-thinkbalm/ .

Please contact Erica or Sam if you have any questions. Info is below.

NI Shares the Love from DIDX Team for its Wholesale Telephony Member Community

Nauman is one of the coolest, smartest, most customer-loved member on our DIDX team. I like the way he shares great deals on DID phone numbers for wholesale buyers in this video.

Did anyone see him take the lead on our company's rendition of "All We Need is Love?"

Mzinga, Techistan and Rad-Info Share Social Media for Business Marketing

First, let me thank the guys from Inc.com who used my camera to film this. In fact, if anyone was at this panel discussion during ITEXPO East 2010 that Mzinga, Rad-Info and I were a part of and knows these guys, put them in touch with me. I want to thank them and love the commentary behind the camera. You must listen. If you can't see the video on this blog, go to Viddler. The video is 34 minutes long, too long to upload to Youtube. The original, much better quality version was almost 1 1/2 GB large, so I had to reduce the size and therefore the video quality, but the voice sounds pretty good.

Second, so sorry... me, the English teacher starting the presentation with a subject verb non-agreement. __________ and __________ is? Bad, bad. On the other hand listen to Isaac, Peter, some the audience and me as we share tips.

Mzinga's Isaac talks about who is the audience, solving your audience's needs, being a good observer, keeping in mind membership ROI (your networks)... It's a toolbox that enables conversations. Traditional marketing like mass emails compared to the new shows the greater efficiency of the new. He shares two case studies, the second one was their client AllState Insurance. The company looked to Mzinga to help them guildi a community on Allstate website for social networking. It would help their clients really interact with representatives about things like teenage car drivers, drinking and driving, seatbelts, senior citizen and estate planning, etc. Instead of keeping this in a walled garden, Mzinga helped Allstate use what is already available on the Internet in the form of social media.

I mention Linkedin recommendations and questions and answers; Facebook events, wall, pages and groups; Twitter's feed into Linkedin, mixing social media to help clients, vendors and industry partners get what THEY want. More on blogging and podcasting, digging to China,  and more. Isaac has a very professional social networking/media service at Mzinga that he discusses. I share one case study of the one year marketing campaign to help Kenyan Americans get Kenya DID on DIDx.

Facebook Event Admin and Linkedin Claim Event Need to Marry

Facebook shouldn't be so rigid in its Events feature. Actually, I see Facebook and Linkedin have two different best practices that should be combined on both. On Linkedin, you can "claim the event," but not have other "Admins" like Facebook lets you. Ideally Facebook should let for example DIDXchange or Techistan add an event either is media partner or press agent for, let anyone else claim it as host such as Pegasus Consulting (Pvt) Ltd. for CONNECT IT Pakistan, and then the host can make the original "partner" like us to Pegasus Consulting (Pvt) Ltd. as another Admin.

See Linkedin "claim event" feature:

Facebook add Admin feature:

Victor and I show the power of Linkedin Recommendations

January 20, 2010, at 2 PM, I join Rob Adler of Vantage Communications, Isaac Hazard of Mzima, and Peter Radizeski of Rad-Info, Inc. to discuss and interact with you the audience at ITEXPO East the topic of "How to Leverage Social Media for a Successful Marketing Campaign."

My take will be that *"leveraging social media for a successful marketing campaign" is not about analysing reams of data, being on every social networking site 24/7, having the most followers or friends, bombarding your audience with commercials or regurgitated news, or cutting your competitor. The key to success online is almost the same as the key to success offline. It's just with online, you have more power.

Adam Nash, blogger and a vice president at Linkedin says, "Fortunately, in the 21st century, with the birth of the social web, we have tools at our disposal that are orders of magnitude more powerful than we have ever had as individuals or as a society."

An example of successful marketing using social media is the Linkedin Recommendations feature. Sincerely and truthfully recommend at least one person in your Linkedin network each week.

One of Pensacola, Florida's most popular Microsoft consultants and open source enthusiasts Victor Rojas and I did exactly that. The positive results of our exchange has been, is and will be exponential. In the last 24 hours since Victor's comments, I've already recieved inquiries to advertise in our Techistan and some looking for Virtul Phone Numbers from our DIDX buyer members. It started with a few sincere words of praise about someone else. Recommend someone on your Linkedin Network this week! Victor and I would like to get to know you and see where we can help each other in business at Linkedin and other social media sites.

*Aw! "Leverage" is really a noun and hasn't quite made it into accepted standard Engish as a verb, but, oh well.

Nigerian IT & Telecom Networks on Linkedin DID Discussion

Before 2010, I have plans to interview directors of "communications comissions" of different African nations which will be posted at http://www.didx.net/podcast. I met a few of them at ITW 2008 and ITEXPO East 2009 whom I have stayed in touch with. Right now, there is a discussion on LinkedIn about Zain's choice of Aircom to produce 2G and 3G in Nigeria. The conversation has turned to Nigerian DID needed on DIDX.net. Would you join that discussion group on Linkedin and help out? It's at http://www.linkedin.com/newsArticle?viewDiscussion=&articleID=83824627&gid=1777935.

Thank you, SpeechPhone, DIDX Team and Partners

Thank you, Valdi Best BikePhone, and SpeechPhone. Super Technologies, Inc., right now, has one of the most dynamite, customer-satisfaction oriented teams ever. Our DIDX partners (wholesale buyers and sellers) are a huge part of the reason we are able to provide that one interop that Valdi writes my Linkedin reference about, for one interconnect with 12,000 other providers from 170 countries, 17 million SIP DIDs from 60 nations. I want to thank them all especially.

I recommend that you recommend at least one person per week on Linkedin who you can share a truthfully positive professional reference.

Zale is a CEO and a marathon runner. In fact, that is how I met him, through mutual running interests. He is a marketing consultant and owns a Curves facility in Toronto. You can add him on Linkedin and join the Marathon Runners group on Linkedin with great professionals for networking in business and fitness.

Don't forget, too, that several CXOs and managers in the telecommunications business and outside it who run... are meeting up to run or cheer on those who do run the 1/2 or whole Mardi Gras RocknRoll Marathon in New Orleans, LA on Feb. 28, 2010. Encourage Others to Do Unto You

Have you ever heard people answer you with the excuse, "Look you wimp, this is just business"? They are right. There are many ways of doing business, but two main ones. You and I choose to do unto others before they do unto us or do unto others as we'd have them do unto us. As sappy as it sounds, I prefer and usually do the second no matter how cut-throat the other person is. In fact, this is one of the points I emphasized in my "Global Collaboration with Social Media for Business" presentation at ITEXPO West last week.

In fact if you do enough unto others as you would have them do unto you, eventually they will do unto you what they would have you do unto them. I've been experimenting with this concept all my life since my atheist turned Christian minister Dad instilled it into me.

We are in the IP communications industry that is in the mix of the rest of the world, right? We do benefit if we do not give up on encouraging others to do unto us as they would have us do unto them. There are some great tools that let you do that: face to face, yes... but also Facebook wall and friend suggestion, Linkedin answers and recommendations, TelecomYou's newness, your blog, Twitter RT, #, and @ and... Ask Diana at IPiFony. She agrees with me.

You can watch most of my presentation on Viddler.com under the ID suzannebowen. May the force be with you, but do something nice today like collaborate with your competitor?

Share your thoughts on Mobile Myths

Go to Linkedin to take part in the conversation. BTW, we recommend* participating in some great wireless-related conferences such as 4G World, CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment, and 4G Wireless Evolution, all taking place in the USA in September and October 2009.

Myths to support or debunk:
1: Users want power and aesthetics. Features are everything.
2: What we really need is a Swiss army knife.
3: Focus groups and other traditional market analysis tools are the best way to determine user needs.
4: If it works in Silicon Valley, it will work anywhere.
5: Every application on the planet will be accessible via mobile devices.
6: The industry is converging on a UI standard.
7: Highly usable systems are just around the corner.
8: One underlying operating system will dominate.
9: Mobile devices will be free-or nearly free.
10: Advanced data-oriented services are just around the corner.
11: Shrink your fingers, big buttons and screens are going away

Very interesting question added by Anthony Dubidad of Akendi company.

Come meet with us from DIDXchange at 4G Wireless Evolution and ITEXPO West, Sept. 1-3, 2009, booth 125.

Social Media Marketing Mistakes Debate

Good job, Pam Lontos and Maurice Ramirez, Ph.D! They are the authors of "The Top 5 Mistakes of Social Media Marketing." What do you think?

Summary:
1. Have one image of yourself (brand) broadcast across the different SMM Internet platforms. I admit that I do have a different picture in a few places: Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook, Hi5, Plaxo, etc. and when I get a chance I'll streamline the profile pics, but it should be me, not what someone else wants me to be. I would never tell you what you should be. Besides, here ... I think image ... is mental, not physical (visual).

2. Don't just collect people. Make each relationship meaningful. Doesn't mean you have to be BFF with every single one, but know who they are and interact occasionally in ways that help you both.

3. Make your Facebook updates and Tweets, etc. helpful to your readers and observers and those interacting with you. Actually I disagree a bit with them on this item. They state saying something like this for a Tweet, "I'm watching a movie and eating popcorn," might not be a good idea. I think a little personal information mixed in with your commercial messages make us all fit a bit more connected. Maybe be a little more specific... like, "I'm watching Yes Man and eating some lime salted popcorn." Hmm... I might go watch that and try that popcorn, and I realize you are just as human as I am. I feel a bit more ... connected? ;-)

4. Posting inappropriate messages. Be as conservative as your most conservative client. Wait! There's such a thing as being boring and too safe. Be a bit of a risk taker. Be a little bit yourself. That's my opinion. Okay, so never post anything you wouldn't want your grandmother to see? What goes through my head is... what would I be willing to share with my Dad who is a preacher for the church of Christ. He's pretty funny himself and quite down to earth even though this particular church is known to be very conservative. Well, he's not my client, but he's a good measure of what's appropriate for me.

5. The last one... If you have something that is important to you to say and you think others can benefit from it, post it somewhere it feeds into all your social media marketing platforms you use. Ping.fm does a pretty good job at this. Facebook newsfeed can go automatically to Plaxo, etc.

I was thinking of a few more:
1. Making too many rules for those who follow you, add you, or want to befriend you. That's so negative, like I don't do NDAs or anyone who Tweets too much is off my network, or I don't accept people who don't add the TM mark on marks that require it.

2. Adding everyone, accepting everyone into your networks, even though you totally do not support their image. I.e., those who are constantly proselytizing their religion, politics, lifestyle or who put their company commercials on your wall without a real business relationship to begin with. You can say, "No." You can delete. You can block. You have the right. So I guess I do have a few rules.

You probably do, too. Debate is welcome as always!

Again, what do you think?

Open Access, Self-archiving Academic Papers in Japan

Got this from a friend on Linkedin from Japan... "We are managing a private organization that advocates "open access, self-archiving" for never-before-published academic papers in Japan. The organization is running the following web site in order to promote "self archiving". Check http://www.myopenarchive.org/ and follow http://twitter.com/MyOpenArchive.

We are collecting full paper, short paper, extended abstract, position paper, letter, technical report, poster, resume, article, and etc. One of our goals is to advocate "Open Access" mind. We are introducing ideas such as openID, Creative Commons, Scribd iPaper, and altenative scoring systems (social bookmarks and Hatena Star). Many Japanese scholars believes that Japanese journals are not yet so well-known that foreign scholars will not refer to those papers in Japanese journals. Naturally scholars wants to be referred to by other scholars, so they will submit their papers to foreign journals."

Not exactly accurate translation to Japanese but trying...

日本からの友達http://www.Linkedin.com ... "我々 =一民間団体のためのアーカイブ"自立を促進するための擁護者"オープンアクセス、セルフ"ことのためのアーカイブの前に、日本の学術論文を発表した。同団体は" 。チェックインの< a hrefは、以下のWebサイトが実行されて管理さ" http://www.myopenarchive.org/ " > http://www.myopenarchive.org/ < / a >と http://twitter .com / MyOpenArchive < / a >ください。

Here we go YOYO!

Sunday morning worship at Oakgrove church in Walnut Hill. Enter: Dexter Ledkins, a 4 year old boy with Downs Syndrome. Enter: The preacher whose sermons begin with one tone and end in another, to which Dexter gives much attention.

Each character knew his part. The sermon begins. Dexter folds his soft pudgy hands in his lap, and shouts one time, "Here we go, YOYO." He was unbelievably well-behaved Sunday after Sunday between the start and end of each sermon.

When the preacher closes his sermon, his tone takes on a tone of "I have this memorized... I have said the same thing every Sunday." Those are not his exact words, but the tone switches from fresh to rehearsed.

This is Dexter's cue to shout, "Pidda Hut! Pidda Hut!"

His mother promises him lunch at Pizza Hut every Sunday if he would just behave during worship.

So, when I experience any of the following, I silently say to myself "Here we go YOYO!" and looking to shout with joy, "Pidda Hut!"

1. When I'm told by a conference that my speech cannot be anything near a commercial and yet, 90% of all presentations I listen to at the conferences is a commercial for the speaker's company.

2. When anyone refuses to use CTRL F to find answers.

3. When one's company becomes a corporate sponsor and interconnect for ... say ... a softphone/IM, and the website of the softphone/IM does not add your company to its corporate sponsor list, nor to its interconnects' list, and deletes you from their Facebook and Linkedin networks. This really happened to a great company/service I know. Names not mentioned to protect the guilty.

4. When I'm gone for over a month traveling for my company through London, Dubai, Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Tokyo. (Don't get me wrong, I love these cities, the people, my friends there, our business clients and partners there, and the food, but I miss my husband, my grand-daughter, my 6 days a week running schedule, and worst of all, the piles and piles of work that grew in my absence that MUST be done.)

5. When it's all about the CEO in anyone's company ... don't worry. I know what it is like to be the CEO. I was one for ten years from 1999 - 2009.

6. When everyone in a business discussion that is VERY important to me (the discussion and the people) is speaking a language I know very little of, and I'm whispering to the person beside me ... what does this/that mean and that mean, and they all look irritated that I'm asking. "Hajimemashite" ... "billcul" (it's a pleasure to meet you for the first time in Japanese... definitely in Urdu.) Quit whining, Suzanne, and learn the language. Ha ha!

7. When someone says, "The food artist gave you the free sample because you were one of the older women, and he thought he would have a better chance with you." - Could it be that it is because I treated the artist like a human being and carried a conversation with him and he was showing me that he thought of me as his new friend? Here we go YOYO. ;-)

8. When you ask over and over to your "blog space provider" how to do something, and they keep telling you click on SETTINGS, and you inform them that SETTINGS is not clickable for you, it is grayed out, and the circle of this conversation just repeats itself over and over and you see no pizza in the future.

9. When your laptop or cell phone battery is about to go dead and there is no electricity around OR when your print cartridge is so empty you could drink water out of it and there is no way to get a new one and you must print this service agreement and fax it because your new vendor or customer is still living in the Dark Age of pre-900 AD and will not accept scan with electronic signature.

Got any more? Add 'em. Talk about 'em. YOYO! Or just tell me, wahh wahh, make it stop! Quit complaining. For not, I'll say "Here we go YOYO!"
