Mother's Day Thoughts and Teach her Some Cool New VoIP Service

Can I change the words to a song? First, buy Bette Midler, so people won't say I am plagiarizing or copying something I shouldn't.

Second, I miss my mother, who like me needed a keyfinder. She physically left me one year after my only son was born. She was always so proud of me and let me know it. She pushed me incessantly. On the other hand, she showed me the way to kindness, compassion, and understanding. She surrounded herself with what others would call the "no-bodies," "nerds," "outcasts." When I think of how lovely and inspiring she was, I want to cry with sadness of missing her and the joy of remembering her. I have another mother now, Millie. Hugs, Millie!!! She's just as beautiful.

This song reminds me of the woman who birthed me in 1959, but I changed the words a bit and left some out that don't fit her. Mom, I won't ever forget you.

It must have been cold there in everyone's shadow,

but you always had sunshine in your face.

You were content to let us all shine, that was your way.

You always walked beside us all, trying to pull us forward.

So we were the ones who got all the glory,

while you were the one with all the guts.

A beautiful face without a care for yourself.

A beautiful smile to hide all that pain.

Did you ever know that you're our hero,

and everything we wish we could be?

We can fly higher than an avatar,

for you were and are the wind beneath our egos.

It might seem that we've forgotten,

but we've got it tucked here inside our hearts.

We want you to know we know the truth, yeah.

We would be idiots without you.

Did you ever know that you're our hero... still?

You're everything we wish we could be.

We could fly higher than an avatar,

because you are the wind beneath our egos.

(Mother's Day is May 9, 2010. Call Mom. Use your favorite voIP service. Even better, show her how to use some cool voIP service. Get her a virtual phone line or number. Write a story about her.)

Why Do We Try to Stay up There if it's So Dangerous?

I just read Tracy Ford's article on RCR Wireless regarding Steve Jobs and Apple, and thought about how scary it is to be on top.

"Is anyone else a little tired of Steve Jobs?, the el jefe of the all things that start with i?"

I laughed, and then, I realized how much I talk about running, my family, DIDX, conferences, and the books I love. My deep curiosity for research and play keep me honest here ... usually. I do become a pompous nitwit at times, but usually the open source community rebels cure me of that each time.

"More black turtlenecks to buy?"

I wanted to argue with her. What's wrong with a fashion statement? PTC-goers wear Hawaiian print. Astricon-goers wear moustaches and sunglasses. ITW-goers are all Matrix look-a-likes. ITEXPO-goers are an exception to this rule. They are an eclectic mix. CommunicAsia-goers are covered in gadgets. Mark wears "Kill Bill" shirt.

"And then my sister has turned Mac freak and calls me to gush about her latest purchase. And then I overheard my daughter (who has the iTouch) say she wants an iPad, well, the backlash just continues to climb."

I wanted to agree with her. My husband acts like he'll melt if he touches anything non-Apple. He reminds of the aliens in "Rain, Rain, Go Away" by Isaac Asimov.

"All I can say is Go HP! Go Moto! Go HTC! Go LG! Go Samsung! Go Nokia! Go RIM! Go Sony-Ericsson! If I know anything about this industry it is that the mighty can fall. AT&T Wireless messed up local number portability and had to put itself up for sale. This industry is rife with stories of one misstep -- and BAM – someone steals your spot in line. It's time for some line-stealing, I say."

I can see all sides, I think? But maybe not when I'm in the middle of a "who-know's what" obsession for something I'm currently GaGa about.

Tevye, one of my favorite movie characters of all time asks, "Why do we stay up there if it's so dangerous?"

TANGO EKOKI, SAA INATIMIYA

Several of us in the IP communications industry met Jean-Paul Moka via Facebook social networking site. We guided him on using Skype and other voice over Internet solutions. He's running for *President of the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2011. He shared with me how much USA President Barack Obama has been and is on people all over the world, that they are inspired by his intelligence, eloquence, good deeds and example.

U-Lead tags Mr. Moka as a **"blood-spot free," a Reverend, fun Loving, an economist, Belgium Expat,  and Peaceful Initiator with an Afroploitan Mentalities. Watch the video where Jean-Paul Moka shares his vision.

Moonitin, Egalitarian IP Communications Service for English Teachers and the Like

Moonitin, totally egalitarian, nothing elitist about it, has this highly verbal feel to it. I'm expecting similes, metaphors, sonnets, alliteration and such to jump out at me. It's IP Communications for those who like a portal that compliments their quest for sophisticated language. I can dig it as an ex-English teacher. So what can you and I do with Moonitin?

Send SMS, texts, voice messages, and mail over IP.

Get your own Hyperpager USA DID phone number.

Connect your Moonitin to news, finance, information, Twitter, Ping.fm, and HelloTxt.

Not an all-inclusive list.

Again, I am impressed as only Garrison Keillor and ex-English teachers like me can be ... at the language. I.e., here is an example of what I read in my Moonitin portal.

"Moonitin brings a number of new nouns and (that may also be) verbs into our everyday vocabulary, and an understanding of them is necessary to poste-haste communicate in and about the most efficient and egalitarian communication technology in the history of our world. Please bear with us as we use some new terms freely in our explanatory notes and sometimes even redundantly/ interchangeably to best give you a feel for how dexterously we see them being used."

I'm in love. Ha ha! I'm a fan now.

Technologically-Challenged Dude Wants to Simplify Communications, Help!

With so many IP communications-related experts on our DIDXchange and in my social/business Twitter, Linkedin and Facebook networks, I'm inviting all of these to help the following person get what he needs. I am copying his blog post "word for word."

Title: Technologically-Challenged Dude Seeks To Update/Simplify His Life, If At All Possible

Body:  I wear many hats: Husband, Coach, Marketer, Technician, Communicator...and sometimes I put on a few more as they fall to the ground and I pick them up.

To this point in the game I've done rather well with the technoloigies I've had at my disposal. However, it's come to my attention that I could be a little more efficient, and perhaps spend a little less coin, if I were more aggressive in the use of emerging technologies, such as WiFi, VoIP, and so on. But, given my limited understanding of what might the best blend of price, stability, and ease of use, I have decided to ask the world of technologically-proficient people (I was going to use the term GEEK, but some folks don't like that) what their opinion might be.

Here's what I have at this point in time:

Home telephone - VoIP (provider unnamed) - we get less than a dozen calls a week, and miss most of them because the calls come while we're at our job, at a run or workout, or traveling.

Computer - Toshiba laptop, running Windows Vista, plus a mix of Microsoft, Apple and open source applications. Wireless capability, cable internet provider.

Cell phone - simple CDMA cell phone (the very savvy will know my provider!). I cannot take my phone into my work place, so it's only used when I'm away from work (sit in car, check messages before driving to work, at lunch, before driving home, before/after workout). When I'm out and about I do carry it with me, though.

I recently purchased a 32GB iPod Touch, which - believe it or not - isn't a bad little gadget. Originally I bought it because of the music I want to have available at races and events (one of my other "jobs" has to do with race operations for a race production company...basically means I fill the gaps as needed...get 'er done kind of stuff). It's basically an iPhone without calling capability. It has WiFi capability and I've got some of the social networking apps downloaded, i.e., FB, Twitter, TweetDeck. I also have Skype on it. I found a piece of software for timing and scoring races, which is available only in PalmOS and the iPhoneOS.

WHAT I WANT:
I want to simplify my technology! I know I probably can't get a one-size-meets-all needs kind of gadget. I want to be able to get things done without having to be stuck within someone's WiFi limitations. I want to get as much as I have now, and perhaps a little more, without spending so much, or sending the money to a lot of different people and often overlapping services. If I could get it all from one provider and one device that is mobile enough and small enough but not too small, it would be fantastic.

So, what can you guys tell me?
