Green Feels Good

Jobless ... I was thinking about how I enjoy learning about and sharing what I learn especially in regards to three concepts:

1. IP communications and social networking empowerment

2. IP communications and social networking collaborations

3. IP communications and social networking monetization

There are big changes occurring in my life because of aging and career moves, but I am not afraid. The fear gene is very small in me. I met my husband Michael Bowen via Yahoo personals in 2003. I met the business partner Rehan Ahmed in 1995 of the company we founded in 1999 and grew to great success. Today I am jobless, but I feel great. I have time to pay attention to what I am really interested in, learning, researching, talking to my local and global friends to solve problems and maybe ... innovate.

I even noticed that my herb and vegetable and fruit garden has yellow squash, watermelon, chives, jalapeno peppers, bell peppers, cucumbers, marigolds, zinnias and collard greens growing in it. Normally, each year I do plant seeds, but I never have time to even look at the garden after that. My salads are looking good nowadays!

Today I brainstormed via some voice over Internet applications with a Filipino history teacher and a Pakistani software and website developer on what I can do with my future, and what they might like to do. As a result. the teacher is going to start a podcast channel with interviews between his students in Manila and all types of people abroad. The developer will possibly add a Donate button and/or a Get Featured button to his website to start monetizing it in a fun way.

I feel rich with green all around me, new ideas, new possibilities, and the time to see and interact with it all.

Moonitin, Egalitarian IP Communications Service for English Teachers and the Like

Moonitin, totally egalitarian, nothing elitist about it, has this highly verbal feel to it. I'm expecting similes, metaphors, sonnets, alliteration and such to jump out at me. Technologically-Challenged Dude Wants to Simplify Communications, Help!

With so many IP communications-related experts on our DIDXchange and in my social/business Twitter, Linkedin and Facebook networks, I'm inviting all of these to help the following person get what he needs. I am copying his blog post "word for word."

Title: Technologically-Challenged Dude Seeks To Update/Simplify His Life, If At All Possible


Body:  I wear many hats: Husband, Coach, Marketer, Technician, Communicator...and sometimes I put on a few more as they fall to the ground and I pick them up. 

To this point in the game I've done rather well with the technoloigies I've had at my disposal. However, it's come to my attention that I could be a little more efficient, and perhaps spend a little less coin, if I were more aggressive in the use of emerging technologies, such as WiFi, VoIP, and so on. But, given my limited understanding of what might the best blend of price, stability, and ease of use, I have decided to ask the world of technologically-proficient people (I was going to use the term GEEK, but some folks don't like that) what their opinion might be.

Here's what I have at this point in time: 

Home telephone - VoIP (provider unnamed) - we get less than a dozen calls a week, and miss most of them because the calls come while we're at our job, at a run or workout, or traveling.

Computer - Toshiba laptop, running Windows Vista, plus a mix of Microsoft, Apple and open source applications. Wireless capability, cable internet provider.

Cell phone - simple CDMA cell phone (the very savvy will know my provider!). I cannot take my phone into my work place, so it's only used when I'm away from work (sit in car, check messages before driving to work, at lunch, before driving home, before/after workout). When I'm out and about I do carry it with me, though.

I recently purchased a 32GB iPod Touch, which - believe it or not - isn't a bad little gadget. Originally I bought it because of the music I want to have available at races and events (one of my other "jobs" has to do with race operations for a race production company...basically means I fill the gaps as needed...get 'er done kind of stuff). It's basically an iPhone without calling capability. It has WiFi capability and I've got some of the social networking apps downloaded, i.e., FB, Twitter, TweetDeck. I also have Skype on it. I found a piece of software for timing and scoring races, which is available only in PalmOS and the iPhoneOS.

WHAT I WANT:
I want to simplify my technology! I know I probably can't get a one-size-meets-all needs kind of gadget. I want to be able to get things done without having to be stuck within someone's WiFi limitations. I want to get as much as I have now, and perhaps a little more, without spending so much, or sending the money to a lot of different people and often overlapping services. If I could get it all from one provider and one device that is mobile enough and small enough but not too small, it would be fantastic.

MIT's Personas | Metropath (ologies) about YOU

The world is full of people who have so much to offer you and me. I see the Internet and especially the new confidence, inspired by social online media, as the push to you and me to take a chance and connect with each other. I met Julie Fogg of ActivePort (a company who installs and maintains Nortel turn-key converged telephone systems for businesss) via Twitter. We're going to publish a podcast interview about business and giving to those in need soon to post to DIDX podcasts.

Julie and I are good about encouraging each other to try to new online "tools" that might help us in our life or professional goals. She mentioned that our podcast should be done in Second Life. (Help! ;-)

Bunch of Eeyores Watching Your Success

Yesterday, we had minis, maxis, word processors, car phones, Tandy 1000 HX, digital diaries, Gayfers, Trader John's, measles and SunRocket.

Today, we have slouchy layered shirts, baggy shorts, netbooks, smart phones, unified communications, voip* layered with everything you can imagine, eBay, Craigslist, virtual Facebook parties, swine flu and viruses infecting space station laptops.

While I planted my vegetable, herb, and flower garden under the rising sun around 6 AM, I kept think about how we tend to not appreciate what we have right this second.

Humanity, our industry (IP communications)... We keep ignoring today and waiting for something cool to happen tomorrow. We mope because we don't have a job. We complain because we have one. We talk about how we don't work for anyone, not even ourselves. We hate those "other people" who are not like us. We talk about how no one is innovating as if we are all clones of Eeyore himself. (There's plenty of innovation around VoIP. I hear about the innovation every day from DIDX members. VoIP itself is nothing. It's what we do with it.)

We read the rules in order to use a service on the web. We click to agree. When a rule has to be applied to us such as a penalty fee, commission, minimum... we scream on the bleeding edge of voip murder.

We reek with fumes of revenge against those who we blame for every failure in our lives. We talk about how like to clean, but we don't clean. We don't say thank you to those who are there for us, helping us. We won't even take turns taking out the trash. We don't pay our vendors. And we expect our clients to pay us?

We just complain and watch others ...
work,
live,
smile,
laugh,
help,
argue,
debate,
make up,
make decisions,
pay bills,
solve problems,
and succeed.

I'm no one special, but I love today.

Hiccups here, but Collaboration Rocks in IP Communications

I had a few hiccups in the last six months which I determined not dwell on much: dislocated shoulder (work travel injury), car wreck resulting in totaled car and minimal injuries, and surprising company changes and experiences.

But I'm back on stronger than ever, loving your and our global industry of IP communications!

I'm not really everywhere, but I do recognize certain professional qualities and features among global IP communications-related companies and those who can help them:

Honesty
Collaboration
Integrity
Excellence in customer service
Innovative but at the same very practical services and products
Global reach
Ability to explain anything well, keeping in mind a variety of learning styles, and those who speak ESOL
Ability to use criticism of one's company to better one's company

Nearly all present-day LBS applications are based on GPS or other workarounds, not on operator provided location services.

Open Source Selection Criteria
Open source telephony has revolutionized the world of small- and medium-sized business communications. Digium's Asterisk platform was the first cost-effective way to provide big-enterprise telephony functionality to smaller organizations. While the basic versions of such software is free, business users will want to deal with companies that provide support and additional features for a reasonable fee.

Sharing CFMS with a Few Dozen Entrepreneurs

I haven't been blogging nor running much on SuperTec blogs nor my TMCNET blog in the last week because of a four letter acronym CFMS.

We (Super Technologies, Inc.) are in the middle of helping a few dozen new businesses start up with Call Forward Management System. It's quite hectic and enjoyable. DIDX members are often some of the most fascinating entrepreneurs. They are not necessarily from within the IP communications industry. They are often outside of it and see the potential of layering local international phone numbers for what feels like 50 million different reasons. Virtualphoneline is a general example.

I spoke with Jim Van Meggelen yesterday because I needed some inspiration and I want to set up a podcast interview with him soon, and while talking, we agreed that these are the movers and shakers, these entrepreneurs who serve a special market niche in ways that you and I never thought of before.

They choose the CFMS business we offer because it comes with what they have been trying to do manually (which wastes a lot of valuable time) for a few months or even years: sign up, sales, billing, ticketing communications system, fraud prevention tools; reports for call details, sales, past due; ring to options such as Google Talk, MSN instant messenger, PSTN, SIP, IAX2, FWD, Truphone, and the list goes on.

In about 61 minutes, I start the first of 12 CFMS tours, and I can't wait to hear these ladies and gentlemen's business plans which will include using CFMS.

(As an aside, like as if this blog is a diary, I have gained 15 pounds in the past 12 months of travel, sitting at a computer, a reduction of running from 2007 ... 50 miles per week to 2-6 miles per week. It's amazing. I need to get back into running for my physical and emotional health.)

Junior Achievement, Linking Arms, YMCA

Put a few young enthusiasts together with some encouraging adults and you just might get some of the world's next IP communications' innovations, right here in Northwest Florida! We at Super Technologies, Inc. want to thank the children and classrooms we are collaborating with via the Junior Achievement program.

Another group we strongly believe has the right formula for helping families is Linking Arms, Inc. They not only help families, but the families are expected to participate in helping others, and they do. They emphasize self-respect, concern for others, getting education, securing jobs and what it takes to make that happen whether it's a warm coat, a ride to the local junior college, a day care program, homework help, payment for the home gas or electric bill so every can take a shower...

And last we have much respect for the Downtown area of Pensacola YMCA where for example, the homeless are able to workout and take a shower and much more.

These three organizations: Junior Achievement, Linking Arms, Inc. and the YMCA are groups that Super Technologies, Inc. enjoys collaborating with ... not just during the holiday but all year around. We do not buy into the media hysteria of economic crisis. We believe in helping those right next door wherever possible and keeping it positive.

Women in voIP Panel

Several men and a few women I met at Astricon suggested there be a Women in voIP panel discussion at a few conferences. How can you help with this idea? Let's start by gathering answers to these questions.

1. What topics should be discussed on a women in voIP panel discussion? One person suggested a 3-5 min. description of how each of the panelists got involved in voIP and telecommunications. Another was shared best practices in networking and marketing as well as technical know-how and experience.

2. Who should be on the panel? What company do they work with, position in company, URL, their experience and services they provide?

3. How to get more females in the IP communications, voIP, and telecommunications industry to participate in conferences in not only group roles but also leadership roles? They can be in business, working on a degree in these areas or considering them, all ages.

4. Do you have a blog? Will you blog about this also?

This is not proposed because these women are women, but because we're missing out on accomplishments, ideas, collaborations, and experience of these women. I hope to get some serious discussion on this blog post at this blog, myvoIP by Association blog and on my Facebook network in the notes section. John Cirner was the first to propose the idea to me at Astricon... thanks, John!
