This Ex-English Teacher Loves Google Translate

Ahsan, my colleague, asked me how to pronounce a certain name. I won't list that name, but I want to show you how much fun http://translate.google.com is to learn to pronounce words and labels in so many languages. It may not always be right or the choice that you would make, but it's pretty close to being accurate.

Example, try entering with English to English:

DIDx - It pronounced it "did."
DIDxchange - It pronounced it almost perfectly.
Lombard - Wow! Perfect.
supercalifragilisticexpialidocious - Not bad!!!
antidisestablimentarianism - I found my new English teacher.
Cayona - Perfect! (Steve Cayona is happy!)

Google Translate does a decent job at translating from one language to another from among dozens. It also pronounces words for you. You can also "contribute a translation" which I did the other day with the word "baytaar" which means "wireless" in Hindi and Urdu. Am I right on that?

Google doesn't list Urdu yet, but it does list Hindi.

The other day I saw where someone was asking for a program that will teach English in 30 days. My answer?
1. Make friends with people who speak the language you want to learn. Make it reciprocal where they get something from you also.
2. Watch videos and listen to audio files in the language like on Youtube, Geekspeak, FreshAir, or DIDX telephony-related podcasts.
3. Use online tools like Google Translate.

MIT's Personas | Metropath (ologies) about YOU

The world is full of people who have so much to offer you and me. I see the Internet and especially the new confidence, inspired by social online media, as the push to you and me to take a chance and connect with each other. I met Julie Fogg of ActivePort (a company who installs and maintains Nortel turn-key converged telephone systems for businesss) via Twitter. We're going to publish a podcast interview about business and giving to those in need soon to post to DIDX podcasts.

Julie and I are good about encouraging each other to try to new online "tools" that might help us in our life or professional goals. She mentioned that our podcast should be done in Second Life. (Help! ;-)

PortaOne's 24/7 NOC Answer for DIDX Client

This is a thank you note to PortaOne from me and our DIDX team. Recently the 24/7 NOC at PortaOne came to the rescue for a client of ours. They are a little different from others in the industry in that they allow their clients to make any modifications in their code for your own use. (Just can't sell it, obviously.) After successfully completing the project for the client, a nice surprise was the interop compatibility that resulted. Portaone will soon post this in their documentation pages.

Podcasts on Ipod Motivate my Running

Every Sunday early AM, Tues and Thurs PM with Emerald Coast Racing Team, and Wed PM with CaptnFun Runners at Pensacola Beach, I hook up with my classic IPOD with 100s of podcasts from Geekspeak.org, Bending the Needle, VoIP Users Conference and Stardust Global Ventures' Incidental Interviews. It takes my mind off the humid heat in Pensacola, Florida and on to what's happening in my industry and in my pasttime of technology in general.

The most recent podcast interview of mine is with David Mandelstam of Sangoma on DIDX podcasts. What a treat!

Someone commented on my list of interviews as, "It's definitely not some secret club of yours that you interview. They are developers, CEOs, inventors, innovative monetizers, clients, newbies, and even competitors in your archive of media channel videos, podcasts and photos."

I believe everyone I meet has much of value to share with the rest of the world. I do not have a secret club of industry friends. I believe even in the collaboration of competitors.

Jim Collins is Right, Get the Best People

Me? I just cannot get over what a lucky person I am to be surrounded by family, friends, team members, customers and vendors who inspire, care about, and challenge me every second of every day. One of my goals for this year is to showcase the fantastic talent among the Super Technologies, Inc. team. Dan and I discussed his one year anniversary on the SuperTec team as of May 5, 2009 on the DIDX podcast area.

We take to heart Jim Collins' quote, "If I were running a company today, I would have one priority above all others: to acquire as many of the best people as I could. I'd put off everything else to fill my bus. Because things are going to come back. My flywheel is going to start to turn. And the single biggest constraint on the success of my organization is the ability to get and to hang on to enough of the right people."

Hiccups here, but Collaboration Rocks in IP Communications

I had a few hiccups in the last six months which I determined not dwell on much: dislocated shoulder (work travel injury), car wreck resulting in totaled car and minimal injuries, and surprising company changes and experiences.

But I'm back on stronger than ever, loving your and our global industry of IP communications!

I'm not really everywhere, but I do recognize certain professional qualities and features among global IP communications-related companies and those who can help them:

Honesty
Collaboration
Integrity
Excellence in customer service
Innovative but at the same very practical services and products
Global reach
Ability to explain anything well, keeping in mind a variety of learning styles, and those who speak ESOL
Ability to use criticism of one's company to better one's company

VoIP Dead? eJamming Free Beta

Yesterday, I awoke early, pulled on a sweatsuit and drove to the Bayview Community Park with my husband. He took off running. I can't. I'm still suffering from a combination of post-marathon injuries (almost a year now) and shoulder problems (probably from dragging 2 huge suitcases full of company brochures and a backpack with 2 computers in it, all in the name of saving money on shipping).
