PFE Thoughts on Microsoft Buying Skype

(Proudly Found Elsewhere is how I describe where and how I gathered opinions and facts from known and unknown people and organizations to write this blog post.) On the second Tuesday of May 2011, the planet’s biggest software business noted it would buy the Luxembourg-based entity who created possibly the Internet’s most-used and known Web-based voice service ever. What price did Skype go for … to Microsoft? Eight point five billion!
Results of a survey of various people from different walks of life regarding the new decade’s most exciting online purchase:
Michael Bowen, who is in the human performance technologist industry based in Florida, says, “My knee-jerk response was unprintable. I guess it lets them play in the VoIP ‘game.’ $8.5B seems steep for an entry into the market; no worse than $50K for a Hawai’i Ironman entry on auction. Yahoo reader mentioned ‘kiss free web-based phone calls good-bye.’ Doubt that, but expect a mash into MS Office/IE.”
Sohaib Alvi, CEO of Sage Consultants based in Pakistan and UAE ponders, “I just wonder what they will do to justify this price and what strategy they could possibly have to make money out of this? Must be something of technical value or some synergy that will save them billions over the next few years. I mean, eBay bought it and then dumped it at some 2 billion dollars loss. Wonder what Gates & Co are up to here? Don’t know much about technology back-end but maybe they’ll offer Skype free with their OS.
At the moment some Skype services are chargeable. Remember OSes are becoming redundant as every app begins to get incorporated into the browser. Or maybe they launch a browser with Skype in it for the mobile users. I think Skype knows something too because they refused Google and Facebook who were also offering them around 5 billion, I read.
I think something has happened that has suddenly made the service that Skype offers the next big thing coming that most of us do not know about.”
Alok Saboo, popular VoIP blogger in California, shares, “Past is not always a good predictor of the future. The amount that MS paid for Skype is open to debate, but, we must realize, that the value that MS paid for Skype, depends on the potential synergies (which is difficult for outsiders to evaluate completely). In addition to the technology and reach that Skype brings, it also provides a great way to engage with the ‘hip’ crowd.”
Joshua Alfrejd, a gadget reviewer from Michigan for Techistan magazine and other online sites relates, “Microsoft has the power, the money, the experience and the respect. Skype is cool. It’s kind of like Level 3 and Amazon have the power, the money, the experience and the respect while DIDX and Pandora Radio are cool. I hope that Microsoft does thinks like MTV is … mixing voice, video, and 3D for music concerts and other kinds of events. Also maybe they can leave the free service as is but also make available a premium service that can be embedded into the current business suite that Microsoft offers. Great move by both parties, and both stand to reap advantages in popularity and new revenue.”
Ayesha Ambreen, Business Analyst at Clary Business Machines in Washington, D.C.,

“Microsoft is already sufficient in communication technologies. They don’t need Skype. Microsoft Lync is far more capable in terms of communication. This is rather a defensive move by Microsoft. I think the acquisition is to prevent Skype’s merger with Facebook – birth of a compelling rival in unified communications. The core of Microsoft strategies is unification, and I doubt Skype will fit now or in future. Microsoft is either going to kill Skype or will put Lync’s cover on Skype features. $8.5 Billion spending is anticipated to standout and bring boost to Microsoft unified communication initiative, with no contention and competition in near future. Expand the scope of near … till Facebook or Google will produce a competent communication tool.
Whether incorporated on Browser or Mobile, OS is fundamental. Microsoft Azure is the cloud OS for browser-based communication and is already compatible with Microsoft Lync and Microsoft Communication suite.”
Bryan Capouch from UK counters, “I laughed out loud when I heard it was going to go down. Skype is the Afghanistan of dot-com companies; it will suck life out of Micro$oft just like it did eBay. Eight years now and they’re still not making money!”
Ayesha Ambreen adds, “lol! You are underestimating Microsoft then! Microsoft is known for its well informed and apt decision making. Despite continuous threats from Facebook, Google, Yahoo, and numerous other, Microsoft is the leader because of its strategies that are made for long run and not just impulsive as of eBay.”
Bryan Capouch, states, “Time will tell. Microsoft hasn’t ever innovated anything, starting with their ripping off various other DOSs which morphed into MSDOS. Windows = Mac, Explorer = Netscape, Bing = Google, the list is endless. They were really lucky, and all that’s keeping them going now is the flywheel effect. I’m willing to bet a nickel the world will come around to my point of view on the Skype purchase to anyone who cares to take me up on it!
I will say Skype is a perfect fit for Microsoft in that they are inimical to standards and openness.”

Using Voice over IP to Make Song Videos to Teach Urdu for Children

Our next song we hope to translate and sing is "Three Blind Mice." We started working on the new one by using Skype, GTalk, Super Technologies' Virtual Phone Line service, and Vopium (for communication between time zones that are ten hours apart.) bBut for now, we hope you will enjoy learning to sing the English nursery rhymes of "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes," "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "Skiddamarinkadinkadink, I love you." Momina is the bright young lady in charge here!

Question from Youtube User about Fring and Skype

From VBlick to Fring...

Hey,

I watched your video Suzanne where you called your friend in Israel using skype and he answered the call using fring via his skype account.

How was he able to link his skype account with fring? What did he do in the skype settings that allowed this?

I have fring on my HTC EVO, it's linked to my skype address book, but when someone attempts to call my skype account from theirs, it's not picked up by fring, just by skype.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I live in MD and i'm trying to get video calls going with my family back home in GA.

Thanks!
Vic

... Vic, I hope my friends at fring will reply to you. Thanks for browsing my videos on Youtube!

How to and How Not to Get People to Work Happily and Productively

There is such a thing. I was comparing the difference between Fring and Skype for ease of download, installation, use, ease of managing settings and de-installation. I called 6 CXOs to discuss the title of this blog post at the same time. I plan to write about both on my TMC blog some time in June.  For now...

Some videos on Youtube that focus on CXOs and human resources:

10 Tools of VoIP Success, How to Get More

What has led to the success of so voIP entrepreneurs even in a time of "global recession"?

1. The proliferation of broadband, Internet and wireless
2. Open source technologies such as Asterisk, freeSWITCH, Yate, OpenSER (now OpenSIPS)
3. Free or near free calling tools: the Internet Phone of VocalTec in 1995, BuddyPhone, Skype, Gizmo Project, MagicJack
4. The power and magic of SIP
5. Local presence and virtual presence promoted by Virtual Phone Line (2000)
6. The ability for any entrepreneur or company to become a global provider via local international phone numbers that give a local presence to their users from DIDX (2005) (VPL and DIDX, inventions of Rehan Allahwala Ahmed)
7. Codecs G723, G729
8. Jeff Pulver, Vonage and VON and Jeff's insistence on breaking the mold, never be satisfied
9. IP PBX, a.k.a. IP PABX less expensive and more flexible than traditional PBX
10. ITEXPO and TMCnet.com under the modest but innovative leadership of Rich Tehrani

We've not even touched the edge of what's possible. Who knows what mind-blowing, life-improving innovations lurk in the minds of those in remote and rural areas, emerging countries, third world countries, developing countries? A shameless plug for a conference to consider whose discussion will include this very important topic: ITU Telecom World 2009.

Participate in the VoIP Users Conference Skype to ZipDX

Just in on email from VoIP Users Conference ...
Hi all,

In about 4 hours from this writing, the G.722 conference bridge will be brought up, the Talkshoe G.711 also, so you can call in via SIP, PSTN or Skype (experimental)

http://vuc.me for all the gritty details

IRC #voip-users-conference anytime today

We'll also be talking about hosted PBX systems and what they might need to bring telephone into not the 20th, but the 21st century.

It seems like only yesterday, but it was 130 years ago in 1879, that the Bell company acquired Edison's patents for the carbon microphone from Western Union. This made the telephone practical for long distances and it was no longer necessary to shout to be heard at the receiving telephone. Funny, but on most cell phones it is again
necessary to shout to be heard;

Virtually Experience Buy/Sell DID/DDI at CTIA

DIDXchange is showcasing its partners Speechphone, Grandstream, BlinkMind Communications and Comtel-Networks this week at the CTIA Wireless 2009 trade show in Las Vegas.

The DIDXchange has set up shop at the event to demonstrate the many ways it integrates direct inward dialing (DID) through solutions such as virtual office assistant, Skype GXV3000 Grandstream video phone and GXP2000 IP phone, and Eyebeam’s soft phone - on both IP data side and voice side.

The 12,500 DIDX members, wired and wireless, who use DIDXchange are well positioned to meet the needs of a crucial segment of the wireless industry, true mobility via international and domestic DID with real lucrative, innovative mash-up and even traditional feeling services," said Suzanne Bowen, vice president of Super Technologies, Inc.

Puleng Helps the Sociopaths to Responsibility with DID/DDI

Yesterday I listened to the business plan of a young lady from South Africa who just joined www.didx.net. She asked me just to refer to her as Puleng.

So Puleng provides services to mental institutions and psychiatric hospitals around the globe. She plans to add the opportunity for her clients both the patients and their families and the medical staff with local international phone numbers to stay in touch easier such as among hospitals and patient to family.

I asked her what led her to this particular market niche. Puleng said, "My ex-boss was a socio-path."

"What was she like?" I asked.

She replied, "He, not she. Lesedi was also my boyfriend (extramarital affair.) He was devastating to us all. Every step we took forward for the company, he caused it to fall back three. The same with our relationship. I'm not with Lesedi anymore, but I still want to help the mentally ill to get better."

Then Puleng copied this text to me to help me understand a sociopath. The gist of her message to me was that sociopaths do not think they are sociopaths and always think they are having to fight "something" or "someone" who is against them when it would be better if they just took responsibility for their own actions and understand the relationship between their actions and the results that those actions incur.

* Promiscuous sexual behavior, sexually deviant lifestyle
* Poor judgment, failure to learn from experience
* Lack of personal insight
* Failure to follow any life plan
* Abuse of drugs including alcohol
* Inability to distinguish right from wrong

Puleng, I know you are reading my blog. Thank you for sharing your story, and remember, we're here to help you with what I think is a good cause: helping one person at a time toss entitlement and start taking responsibility, whether mentally ill or not.

Tomorrow, Puleng, you can call my South Africa phone number and it will ring my Skype or Gizmo softphone. Would you like to do a teleconference between me and an incumbent telecom who just joined DIDX to sell numbers, Puleng? I think they would be interested to hear from you as one example of the great innovation among members of DIDX.

DIDX is really nobody but the powerful suppliers and innovative entrepreneurial buyers that we serve are the creme de la creme.

Televoce CEO on Social Networking at Bloggers' Breakfast

Today's blog is courtesy of Anne Tredway and Bryan Coburn.

Watch the video at http://www.viddler.com/explore/suzannebowen/videos/21/.

Ed Prentice of TeleVoce was one of the small group attending the DIDX Blogger Breakfast during ISPCON. He's focusing on social networking. He remembers Comdex where the hall was so noisy that you couldn't tell how bad the quality might have been during voip demos. He discusses what Skype has done for consumers and small businesses and the fact many don't admit to that fact.

We go on here to summarize this video. Please click and watch and pass on the great clip! ... The SIP community was thinking that Skype couldn't work because it wasn't SIP. But people don't care what a solution is made of. They care what it will do for them.

Ed states that he is learning much from the Facebook world and thrilled to see that Suzanne Bowen and the gang were hosting a bloggers' breakfast during ISPCON at the Il Fornaio. Ed says, "I'm a secret fan of yours. This is great."

(Aw, you have made Suzanne's day, Ed!)

The group asked Ed, "What had he noticed about social networking that most effectively helps you move your business forward?"

Answer: "This is a revolution... we started contemplating as far as all the communications expertise I have ... quit trying to force something into this world... first application we did on Facebook called Poke the Pope on Facebook. It's a tool to learn the system. What we haven't done yet is to figure out how you should take advantage of social networking? ... One of the things you have to do in the social networking world is how do you keep 'them' motivated? ... I found someone who is good at leveraging social networking."

Ed Prentice continues, "When you talk to people in causes (on Facebook), they don't understand the concept of capitalism. All they have is a tincup and they walk around holding their tincup."

This reminds us of the kids who sit in front of Wal-mart with a tincup stating they need funds to go to camp or be in some t-ball play-offs. Not a very good impression and there are better more effective ways of completing this task.

Bring in corporate sponsors instead of thinking how much money will we have left when we are done donating.

Matthew Hardeman asked if by causes, did Ed Prentice mean philanthropic? He mentions that Ed and other social networking entrepreneurs are giving companies and causes another great venue to publish their work.

Ed thinks that social networking is very game-centric. He remembers his meeting with Facebook developers where this fact hit home. Ed is an engineer product designer and finds games concept on Facebook stimulating. How do you make people want to invite others to play the game? Suzanne Bowen and Jeff Pulver were the two key people on Facebook that he sees using it effectively.

See the video recording Suzanne made of Jeff sharing his social networking vision on Youtube.

Thank you from Super Technologies, Inc. and DIDX to Matthew Hardiman of IPiFony, Ed Prentice of Televoce, and Bryan Coburn (the video recorder of this session) at the Bloggers' Breakfast during ISPCON.

Homeless Showed me How DIDX is Pretty Cool

Sitting in Breaktime Expresso this morning, sharing coffee with a few local *homeless guys and gals... (no, I'm not homeless, but I have been), we discussed the news on Google and Yahoo on my laptop (free WIFI at BE, cool). They are some of the few American consumers (non-telecom-businesspeople) who don't bat an eye when I tell them Super Technologies offers mainly wholesale telecom solutions like a global phone number exchange.

They usually respond with one of the following:
1. So, you mean, I could get me a phone number of my own that I could get calls and voicemails on even though I don't own a cell phone or landline?
2. I could sure use finding a telephone company who could do that for me. There's a few PC's on WIFI at the local End of the Line Cafe I can use free. They have headsets, too. Now, I don't have to give away my freedom just to get a phone number.

Very interesting, indeed... so what is the latest for DIDXCHANGE?

DIDX.net, the world’s largest DID/DDI phone number market place, announces interconnection with Microsoft MSN Messenger using gtalk2voip services. DIDX is the DID exchange for 3250+ telecom companies from over 200 countries around the globe.

DIDX began with 100 members in August 25, 2005. It is one of the most disruptive yet practical VoIP services in the 21st century, created and maintained by Super Technologies, Inc., VoIP technology company for six years, based in sunny Pensacola, Florida.

The MSN interconnection makes Super Technologies, Inc. the first company in the world to offer phone lines on Microsoft MSN Messenger and the opportunity to empower more individuals and industry than ever with DID from Africa, Asia, Americas, Australia, and Europe. “We predicted the ever-increasing demand in the world market for DID versatility as long ago as 1999. We have made it our mission to cater to this demand.

Most of all, we are excited about the un-imaginable number of opportunities available to us and even more so, our thousands of global telecom partners to benefit from this deal,” says Suzanne Bowen CEO, Super Technologies. Customers can own a US, UK, France, Australia, Malaysia, Poland, Pakistan, and/or Nigeria phone numbers (DID = Direct Inward Dialing) on their regular Microsoft MSN Messenger.

Super Technologies, Inc.'s DIDX service is poised to offer similar interconnection services for other exciting programs such as Google Talk, Gizmo Project, Groovytel, Free World Dialup**and Skype. Initially the service will be offered through the DIDX’s retail number sales web site on www.virtualphoneline.com

Measures are in the process now to add the module to the wholesale DID engine at www.didx.net. MSN Messenger*** is a service and product of Microsoft Corporation.

Google Talk is a service and product of Google, Inc. Skype is a product and service of Skype Limited. All services and products mentioned are property of their relative companies.

*See Eddie of San Jose, homeless and sitting at Lite Rail at 2 AM to be on time to his new job.

**As of fall 2008, Freeworlddialup is a paid service.

***MSN Messenger is the second most popular IM after QQ in China.
