What Austin, Texas location will be the ITEXPO West 2011 All Conference Party?

Mango's Tropical Cafe, right on the Miami Beach coastline and the location of ITEXPO East 2011 All Conference Party, really was fun!

Sponsors were AudioCodes, DIDXchange, Eaton, and Lockheed Martin. Mauricio Puche and Max Glucksmann were giving salsa lessons on behalf of DIDX, entertainment by the Mango Dance Team, and the place was packed with hundreds of ladies and gentlemen who were participating in ITEXPO East 2011.

Let J. Terentuiuk at TMC know where you think they should host the ITEXPO West All Conference Party in Austin, Texas September 13-15, 2011. I'm happy. The conference starts on my birthday.

Will TMCNET.com publish this press release?

Beginning September 1, 2010, every press release I have applied to have accepted on www.tmcnet.com were not accepted. I have suggested 7 press releases and thought they would be published because each one received a web response like in the picture you see on this blog post, but they were not. I have emailed people on the staff, tweeted about it, etc. No response. They are usually really awesome ...

(On October 25, 2010, Erik Linask of TMC discovered the problem and all is fixed. Our press releases are now accepted again!)

From Jan. 1, 2008 - August 31, 2010 we were able to publish about 33 press releases on TMCNET, one of our favorite websites. We often recommend companies to buy channels there, we congratulate those who do, and heavily promote the ITEXPO conferences because we like them and have gained many DIDX customers and Call Forward Management customers through them.

Here is a screenshot of the promise of the most recent one for ... "Mobile Monday and DIDX Team Up at Gitex 2010 in Dubai." It should be posted at http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2010/10/18/5075695.htm. Let's see. Just another Mobile Monday.

Well, it is October 19, 2010 Tuesday the next day ... and it still is not published. I'll check again tomorrow.

Is the Phone Number (DID) Dead?

I had this idea to share with the world of telecom-related providers that the phone number is not dead, even though we have social networking, cell phones, email, instant messengers, and tons of unified and converged communications solutions.

So, I emailed Hugh Goldstein my idea in the form of a Power Point presentation. And ... ITEXPO West has accepted.

Topic: Voice Interconnect and Peering Conference during ITEXPO West! Visit http://www.itexpo.com/ to sign up to attend, sponsor, exhibit.

Description: As VoIP services, presence, app markets and social networking begin to merge and dominate the consumer's Internet focus, are e.164 telephone numbers a thing of the past? Evidence suggests this is far from the case, in fact, LNP and DID wholesale providers are opening up new opportunities for e.164 numbers to enable new communications services and take a key functional role in the integration of new Web communications platforms and experiences. This panel will explore the trends and opportunities, and give use cases for social networking, Video telephony and nongeographic number business and use scenarios.

Why Do We Try to Stay up There if it's So Dangerous?

I just read Tracy Ford's article on RCR Wireless regarding Steve Jobs and Apple, and thought about how scary it is to be on top.

"Is anyone else a little tired of Steve Jobs?, the el jefe of the all things that start with i?"

I laughed, and then, I realized how much I talk about running, my family, DIDX, conferences, and the books I love. My deep curiosity for research and play keep me honest here ... usually. I do become a pompous nitwit at times, but usually the open source community rebels cure me of that each time.

"More black turtlenecks to buy?"

I wanted to argue with her. What's wrong with a fashion statement? PTC-goers wear Hawaiian print. Astricon-goers wear moustaches and sunglasses. ITW-goers are all Matrix look-a-likes. ITEXPO-goers are an exception to this rule. They are an eclectic mix. CommunicAsia-goers are covered in gadgets. Mark wears "Kill Bill" shirt.

"And then my sister has turned Mac freak and calls me to gush about her latest purchase. And then I overheard my daughter (who has the iTouch) say she wants an iPad, well, the backlash just continues to climb."

I wanted to agree with her. My husband acts like he'll melt if he touches anything non-Apple. He reminds of the aliens in "Rain, Rain, Go Away" by Isaac Asimov.

"All I can say is Go HP! Go Moto! Go HTC! Go LG! Go Samsung! Go Nokia! Go RIM! Go Sony-Ericsson! If I know anything about this industry it is that the mighty can fall. AT&T Wireless messed up local number portability and had to put itself up for sale. This industry is rife with stories of one misstep -- and BAM – someone steals your spot in line. It's time for some line-stealing, I say."

I can see all sides, I think? But maybe not when I'm in the middle of a "who-know's what" obsession for something I'm currently GaGa about.

Tevye, one of my favorite movie characters of all time asks, "Why do we stay up there if it's so dangerous?"

Mzinga, Techistan and Rad-Info Share Social Media for Business Marketing

First, let me thank the guys from Inc.com who used my camera to film this. In fact, if anyone was at this panel discussion during ITEXPO East 2010 that Mzinga, Rad-Info and I were a part of and knows these guys, put them in touch with me. I want to thank them and love the commentary behind the camera. You must listen. If you can't see the video on this blog, go to Viddler. The video is 34 minutes long, too long to upload to Youtube. The original, much better quality version was almost 1 1/2 GB large, so I had to reduce the size and therefore the video quality, but the voice sounds pretty good.

Second, so sorry... me, the English teacher starting the presentation with a subject verb non-agreement. __________ and __________ is? Bad, bad. On the other hand listen to Isaac, Peter, some the audience and me as we share tips.

Mzinga's Isaac talks about who is the audience, solving your audience's needs, being a good observer, keeping in mind membership ROI (your networks)... It's a toolbox that enables conversations. Traditional marketing like mass emails compared to the new shows the greater efficiency of the new. He shares two case studies, the second one was their client AllState Insurance. The company looked to Mzinga to help them guildi a community on Allstate website for social networking. It would help their clients really interact with representatives about things like teenage car drivers, drinking and driving, seatbelts, senior citizen and estate planning, etc. Instead of keeping this in a walled garden, Mzinga helped Allstate use what is already available on the Internet in the form of social media.

I mention Linkedin recommendations and questions and answers; Facebook events, wall, pages and groups; Twitter's feed into Linkedin, mixing social media to help clients, vendors and industry partners get what THEY want. More on blogging and podcasting, digging to China,  and more. Isaac has a very professional social networking/media service at Mzinga that he discusses. I share one case study of the one year marketing campaign to help Kenyan Americans get Kenya DID on DIDx.

Social Networks, Offline or Online, United We Stand, Divided We Fall

Networks get things done. United we stand. Divided we fall, right? In fact, when I was asked at the ITEXPO "Using Social Media for a Successful Business Campaign" panel why our company chose to use social media in meeting our company goals... I replied, "We wanted to collaborate and get more done, faster, for our clients, vendors and partners, and with a more global reach and group of participants since DIDX is composed of service providers, carriers and operators in 170 nations."
I remember in 2005 when Kelly, my sister-in-law first told me about Facebook, I thought, what a waste of time, I don't want to play games, and maybe later. So, I'm using a few social media sites regularly without wasting time, I don't play games ;-), and getting a lot more done with quality.

You wouldn't believe, people of all walks of life anywhere just about in the world are using social media and social networks to accomplish important things:
1. Find jobs.

2. Make new friends.

3. Finding partners.

4. Getting help on any kind of project.

5. Taking a creative break. (This is one of my favorite.)**

6. Find answers.

7. Ask questions.

8. Plan, promote and execute events.

9. Connect back with old friends, business people and classmates.

10. Introduce people who can really help each other.

11. Showcase whoever you admire and are inspired by and how and why. (This is one of my favorite.)**

12. Find out what your customers need and figuring out with them how to make it happen. **
In this Social Networking in Plain English video in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish or German that Graham Francis of TheSIPSchool.com shared with me, the speaker mentions the fact that a network is only as valuable as people can see. That is something to think about. So, it's like Jimmy Buffet said about Margaritaville. It is wherever you want it to be.

Victor and I show the power of Linkedin Recommendations

January 20, 2010, at 2 PM, I join Rob Adler of Vantage Communications, Isaac Hazard of Mzima, and Peter Radizeski of Rad-Info, Inc. to discuss and interact with you the audience at ITEXPO East the topic of "How to Leverage Social Media for a Successful Marketing Campaign."

My take will be that *"leveraging social media for a successful marketing campaign" is not about analysing reams of data, being on every social networking site 24/7, having the most followers or friends, bombarding your audience with commercials or regurgitated news, or cutting your competitor. The key to success online is almost the same as the key to success offline. It's just with online, you have more power.

Adam Nash, blogger and a vice president at Linkedin says, "Fortunately, in the 21st century, with the birth of the social web, we have tools at our disposal that are orders of magnitude more powerful than we have ever had as individuals or as a society."

An example of successful marketing using social media is the Linkedin Recommendations feature. Sincerely and truthfully recommend at least one person in your Linkedin network each week.

One of Pensacola, Florida's most popular Microsoft consultants and open source enthusiasts Victor Rojas and I did exactly that. The positive results of our exchange has been, is and will be exponential. In the last 24 hours since Victor's comments, I've already recieved inquiries to advertise in our Techistan and some looking for Virtul Phone Numbers from our DIDX buyer members. It started with a few sincere words of praise about someone else. Recommend someone on your Linkedin Network this week! Victor and I would like to get to know you and see where we can help each other in business at Linkedin and other social media sites.

*Aw! "Leverage" is really a noun and hasn't quite made it into accepted standard Engish as a verb, but, oh well.

Les Paul and the Media Server Industry

Need input on this Linkedin discussion! Carl Ford has posed this discussion question, and I know that over a 1000 on my Facebook network are in the IP communications industry are qualified to discuss plus thousands of DIDX members. Several hundred of my connections are in the music industry, too. So please login to your DIDX account and participate.

The question is ...
Besides the electric guitar, Les Paul was a the father or dubbing and overlaying voices and sounds, the impact was to create media mixing, which directly relates to what we do in telecommmunications.

Does any one have more direct ties to that history, they would like to share? Answer on Linkedin.

My Boss is Me and I'm Not Slowing Down for Her

Age. What images are created in your mind when you hear that word? I recently heard someone say they were worried about what their boss was going to do as they age and slow down.

Age and slow down? Is there such a thing? I can't speak for others, but I can speak myself and my husband will vouch for me. I used to work Monday - Friday about 6 AM - 6 PM and then start back about 8 PM - 10 PM and I would work another 16 hours or so over the weekend, averaging 80 hours a week. I very rarely complained, and when I did, it only irritated others. But ah! yes! Muaah!

We finally hired more qualified personnel, and I was able to relieve myself of tasks that do not come natural to me and pass to those whom they do. More than ever, I am enjoying our work at Super Technologies, Inc. because I have more time for my family and friends. In addition, the work I do now is what I am good at doing: publicity, marketing, writing, speaking, developing business.

I am definitely not slowing down. The time I used to spend poring over financial records and trying to solve technical problems I didn't understand, I am now reading more, taking my time to *research before writing. I am getting to know the fantastic and inspiring entrepreneurs and businesses all over the world via podcasts, video interviews and face to face at conferences and as a result, delivering content people are actually interesting in!

I finally have the chance to do the things that I always thought are important in business: showcasing the utter veracity, innovation and intelligence among men and women who are our clients, suppliers and vertical or horizontal "partners" in our IP communications social media "industry." I couldn't be happier in profession and career.

When I'm not working, I'm running, biking, doing yoga, playing with grandchildren, discussing books with daughter-in-law, herbal gardening, experimenting with eBay, working on a couple books that I may never finish, checking on all my adopted sons and daughters who work with me.

*Regarding research before writing... people think that writing is not work. If you love it, it doesn't feel like working, but it takes work to produce a piece worth reading, content worth passing on. Which reminds me, I have two very important pieces of writing that are taking much research and thought so that I wish I could work with no interruption for at least 3 days in a row to get them done:

1. The white paper/case study on Fax over IP DID and the demonstrations of this at the ITEXPO West Sept 1-3, 2009 conference, specifically at the DIDXchange booth 125

2. The speech or presentation I'll give at ITEXPO West 2009 in Los Angeles where we are a media partner and exhibitor, basically about "The Natural Fit of Social Media and Business" or something like that

My boss is me, and I'm not slowing down for her. ;-D Next race goal is the Mardi Gras Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 Marathon in New Orleans on Feb. 28, 2010.

Smart Grid Summit at ITEXPO including Energy Management in the Home

Feel like conferences you attend have the same people and showcase the same technologies? Not ITEXPO. Smart Grid Summit at ITEXPO, Sept 1-3, 2009 is a hot new area that is driving massive participation. Check http://smart-grid.tmcnet.com/conference/west-09/.

Grid Interoperability & Standards
As reflected by The Energy Independence and Security Act, the need for a common grid architecture, where all aspects of grid communications and control are standardized uniformly is of central importance to a proper functioning Smart Grid infrastructure. In this panel, members of various international and national standards bodies spanning the full spectrum of the communications industry, together with leading solutions providers will share their insights.

Energy Management in the Home
Home energy management will be a significant opportunity brought on by the Smart Grid. There are various issues which have to be addressed in this space: if real time-time data access is needed, device interoperability, the impact of regulations on a competitive landscape, issues of who controls devices and owns the data they generate, consumer privacy.

Emerging Opportunities
When the Smart Grid is connected to the Smart Home, we will have the required infrastructure to expand past energy management into many other fields enabled by real-time two-way communications. This session will explore emerging opportunities and business models that come with ubiquitous broadband, smart metering, and critical steps to reduce our dependence on non-renewable energy sources.

Utilities and Their Smart Grid Visions
Smart Grid is a broad concept, and being so new, utilities have various visions and deployment plans. Some of this is driven by regulatory and policy issues, some is based on local market dynamics, and some is based a particular vision about sustainable or green energy initiatives. This session will explore a range of visions and best practices from utilities in various stages of Smart Grid deployment.

Demand Response on a Communications Enabled Grid
In industrial settings, Demand Response services play a central role in the efficient use of energy. Looking beyond this niche, the automation and real-time gauging of Demand Response applied to consumers in general will be, among other things, both essential to a grid supporting renewable energy sources and paramount to a reliable energy grid. This panel will include thought leaders from the leading DR service providers, DR technology vendors, and researchers to explore the new opportunities of demand response on a Smart Grid.

Specific Critique for ITEXPO Conferences, Flat Planet Phone and VoicePulse

Specific and truthful critiques like these of IP communications related conferences are what we are looking for. Check out the ones from Moshe Maeir and Ravi Sakaria, especially. (To sign up to participate in ITEXPO West Sept. 1-3, 2009 go to http://www.itexpo.com.

ITEXPO East 2009 was a breath of fresh air. Despite beginning to feel suffocated by the endless rhetoric of a worsening economic climate and a decrease in buying power, what VoicePulse experienced at ITEXPO was a real world example that businesses are in fact ready to buy. As a Voice over IP service provider, the amount of booth traffic VoicePulse received and the qualified leads generated from ITEXPO only reassured us in our belief that the market is truly ripe for a serious commitment to VoIP. When it comes to IP telephony, what were once only business concepts have now matured into specific business models that are reshaping the communications market. Not suprisingly, VoicePulse was able to witness that first hand at this conference.
Ravi Sakaria, President & CEO, VoicePulse

The qualified leads we received at the show were beyond our expectations. It was the one of the most focused shows we have been at in years!
Greg Hamburg, Director of Sales, Voipswitch

A whopping 61.5% of the attendees fit our customer profile. Resellers, VARs and Service Providers who offer Hosted PBX services
to the SMB market. We went home with piles of solid leads. ITEXPO is the show that brings in real buyers.
Moshe Maeir, Chief Flattening Officer, The Flat Planet Phone Co.

Well what a surprise I got! When I arrived on Tuesday the whole place had a buzz about it. Everyone I met was upbeat and energized. At every exhibition session we took received leads in volume as high as we have ever seen at ITEXPO.
Chris Gravett, Sales and Marketing Director, Aculab plc

It was absolutely awesome and we did fantastically at the show. Get me a good spot for September!!!
Don Palmer, CEO, SIP Print

Our DIDXchange is a media partner for ITEXPO West 2009. I believe that this conference offers a chance to do any of the following...
1. Gather information and conduct research
2. Develop business and find new ideas for new business ideas
3. Connect with IP communications software developers and "monetizers" for a healthy and versatile idea of where you want to go next
4. Socialize with people in your industry to get to know them better
5. Attend the paid conference sessions which are well worth it
6. Get certified in different areas
7. Learn about voip, foip, hd communications, 4g wireless and more and how you can use any of them for your business, home, or entrepreneurial mashup

for any of the following...
1. Consumers and families
2. Developers
3. Monetizers
4. Entrepreneurs
5. Carriers wired and wireless
6. Social and business community portals, media, and marketing groups
7. Students and professors
and more!

See you there.

ITEXPO West 09 Helps Exhibitors Color Coordinate

It may seem silly for me to make a big deal out of this, but I think this is smart of ITEXPO West set for Sept 1-3, 2009 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Check out their exhibitor quick refenence at http://www.tmcnet.com/voip/conference/west-2009/exhibitor-manual/w09-exhibitor-information.htm. They state right at the top that the carpet is blue and the curtains around the booths are white and blue.

Another great best practice of ITEXPO! You can sign up to exhibit, sponsor and participate in many ways, but I would say hurry because it's filling up fast and will be bigger and more meaningful for business and technical development, more than ever.

(DIDXchange is a media partner for ITEXPO West and also an exhibitor at booth 125 where you watch live demonstrations of DIDX signups, interop testing, and ... DIDx now supporting T.38!)

We ordered blue carpet and table skirts for our booth this year. For once, we'll match! :-D

10 Tools of VoIP Success, How to Get More

What has led to the success of so voIP entrepreneurs even in a time of "global recession"?

1. The proliferation of broadband, Internet and wireless
2. Open source technologies such as Asterisk, freeSWITCH, Yate, OpenSER (now OpenSIPS)
3. Free or near free calling tools: the Internet Phone of VocalTec in 1995, BuddyPhone, Skype, Gizmo Project, MagicJack
4. The power and magic of SIP
5. Local presence and virtual presence promoted by Virtual Phone Line (2000)
6. The ability for any entrepreneur or company to become a global provider via local international phone numbers that give a local presence to their users from DIDX (2005) (VPL and DIDX, inventions of Rehan Allahwala Ahmed)
7. Codecs G723, G729
8. Jeff Pulver, Vonage and VON and Jeff's insistence on breaking the mold, never be satisfied
9. IP PBX, a.k.a. IP PABX less expensive and more flexible than traditional PBX
10. ITEXPO and TMCnet.com under the modest but innovative leadership of Rich Tehrani

We've not even touched the edge of what's possible. Who knows what mind-blowing, life-improving innovations lurk in the minds of those in remote and rural areas, emerging countries, third world countries, developing countries? A shameless plug for a conference to consider whose discussion will include this very important topic: ITU Telecom World 2009.

PortaOne's 24/7 NOC Answer for DIDX Client

This is a thank you note to PortaOne from me and our DIDX team. Recently the 24/7 NOC at PortaOne came to the rescue for a client of ours. They are a little different from others in the industry in that they allow their clients to make any modifications in their code for your own use. (Just can't sell it, obviously.) After successfully completing the project for the client, a nice surprise was the interop compatibility that resulted. Portaone will soon post this in their documentation pages.

Listen to an interview between me Suzanne Bowen of DIDX and Roman Khalenkov of PortaOne at DIDX, PortaOne Record a Podcast to Discuss the Unique Advantages of PortaSwitch: Source Code, 24/7 Technical Support and Maintenance.

We will both be at ITEXPO West Sept 1-3, 2009, with PortaOne at booth 427 and DIDX at booth 125. ITEXPO West in Los Angeles looks like one of the best IP communications meetups. We must see you there, too!

Friends become Business Partners and Vice Versa

Sometimes your friends become your customers, business partners or suppliers or vice versa. We think the world of VoIPSwitch as friends but also as inspiring innovators in IP telephony and IP communications. We met online through DIDX back in 2005, but we met Chris, Lukasz, Michel, Michael and more from VoipSwitch in person finally at ITEXPO East in Miami.

VoipSwitch and we met again at CommunicAsia 2009 in Singapore in February and had the most amazing time referring clients back and forth, helping entrepreneurs make their mash-up ideas a reality, and bringing on new global carriers to sell DID from new countries on DIDX!

Check out their video that explains how to leverage the wholesale DID marketplace on Youtube with DIDX's new API, and the great article that TMCnet editor Tim Gray edited on the DID/DDI channel.

So, what else are DIDX and VoipSwitch doing? Co-sponsoring a Lucky Strike Bowling Party during ITEXPO West 2009 in Los Angeles! ITEXPO West is a great conference for consumers, early adopters, carriers, voip companies, ip communications companies, ip pbx vendors, wireless operators and more. It's Sept 1-3. You can sign up for free expo passes, but even better get a conference pass which includes great educational sessions, breakfast, lunch, receptions and more close proximity to others who are serious business development and procurement. Sign up at http://www.itexpo.com.
