To Use or Not to Use Google Voice Outside the USA

According to a VoIP list moderator about Google Voice outside the USA ...

You don't get full usefulness from GV unless you are in the USA.

You will need to register from a USA IP address.

You will need a US phone number to send calls to, in order to validate the account.

GV does not easily connect to SIP. (Addition by Suzanne Bowen: but that is why Google bought Gizmo5.)

Outside the USA you can use GV for sending and receiving SMS.

Outside the USA you can use GV as a place to get voicemail.

Outside the USA you can make free calls to the USA only if you have a USA DID or a Gizmo5 account. There may be other hacks, but I don't recommend depending on any of these. Gizmo5 is less than 100% reliable.

(Show me a voIP application or cell phone service that is. None, none at all. The fact that the person says Gizmo5 is less than 100% reliable... congratulations, Gizmo5!!!!)

Flight Fees and Taxes Almost Equal to the Flight Cost Itself

Can you believe this? I found a lower price elsewhere, but I didn't find anything different in regards to the taxes and fees for roundtrip flight from Florida to Barcelona, Spain for GSMA Mobile World Congress on Travelocity, Priceline, Hotwired, Kayak, or on the actual airlines' websites.

See you at the conference in Barcelona. I'll be there from Feb. 15-20, working on behalf of our magazine Techistan and developing business for the 16,200 or so service providers (wired and wireless, mixed with social media quite often) who use DIDXchange for direct inward dialing over SIP and IAX2.

Virtually Experience Buy/Sell DID/DDI at CTIA

You can use Fring, Nimbuzz, Truphone, Rebtel* or many others as your SIP agent. If the SIP agent you download does not offer Barcelona DIDs, you may be able to get one from www.virtualphoneline.com (retail, smb, consumer) or www.didx.net (wholesale where there is a minimum of 50 DID to avoid a monthly $50 fee). There are also several 100 more companies out there that offer local international phone numbers!

* I was just talking with Fredrik of Rebtel and have more news for you: "they have local numbers in Barcelona. Sign up and add a secondary phone number to your account. You can register up to 5 numbers to call FROM."

BRAVO to SUPERCOMM 2009 for International Visitors' Assistance

I traveled 22 weeks of the year 2008 visiting with friends, partners, clients, and potentials all three at conferences around the globe. For me, that was easy because I have always been a USA citizen.

But... many of the brightest entrepreneurial minds are not in the USA. They are citizens of other countries, and it is our loss in the United States to not have opportunity to share, teach and learn from them right here in conferences on our soil.

The one thing I question is why only focus on Spanish, Japanese, French, and German?
