Brough Turner, Entrepreneur and Engineer, from Dancing to Internet Access

A recent podcast of ours is more a conversation with Brough Turner and not really an interview. A full transcription is on Techistan. Brough is an engineer and entrepreneur who I met at the VON 2006 show the first time. He discusses his own history from phone hacking at MIT to morphing many times in business, making some money on the way, craigslist, wireless, 4G and 3G, one laptop per child, dancing, and his ideas for changing the way people access the Internet. Listen and/or read, whatever your preferred information receipt style at http://www.techistan.net/2010/02/05/spend-a-few-minutes-with-brough-turner/.

... browse some of our team's other blogs at http://blogs.didx.net/ and http://blog.tmcnet.com/monetizing-ip-communications/. Find out how to get your telephone company to offer phone numbers from around the world. You're welcome to comment, contribute, and collaborate any time.

Jack Materna's 2007 VoIP Vendor SLA Showdown

I'd like to see Jack do more VoIP Showdowns. I've read each one as soon as they were posted. It's been a while, Jack. Check out his 2007 Multi VoIP Vendor SLA Showdown among Qwest, Axiowave (gone in 2005 I thought), Virtela, Verio and Internap. Include the opportunity to leave a public comment on the showdowns instead of only offering to email comments and responses.

Protect Children from OR in Cyber Space?

Dozens of bloggers, young and old, have responded with their ideas about ITU's World Telecommunications and Information Society Day's theme, "Protecting Children in Cyberspace" via video, after our company Super Technologies, Inc. invited them to do so! I'd like to thank Jehan Ara, president of PASHA, for helping me get the word out. We're showcasing a few here...

Even I toggled between "Protect children from cyber space," like the gentleman at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jMT2DkrHgU and "Protect children in cyber space." But much good collaboration takes place on the Internet where young people can gain important career skills and social networks quite safely. At the same time, there are some people who use the Internet in ways that may harm others, especially children, adults toward and even children toward children. The latter usually involves net bullying. A pretty serious topic itself! (Mohammad Nawaz is a technology consultant and blogger.)

The young lady at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWb_e_IHSGE emphasizes to teach parents first and secondly the children about the Internet. But what? First, help children to understand that they are not anonymous while surfing the Internet. Whatever they share publicly on the Internet... is public. Potential Internet predators search for as much information as they can about the "victim" they have interest in. Parents need to keep the lines of communication open so that children can talk to them about what happens when they are using the Internet. (Farihan Akhtar, she's the one whose been active with Live Blogging at various events these young men and women in total have participated in recently.)

The gentleman with the glasses like mine shares on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EArott67VU... the home computer should be in a location where all family members can view it at the same time even, if they wish. He says parents should talk to their children. (Jamal Ashiqain is a photographer, blogger, and active socialite.)

At http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCYnsc6Gp9o, you will hear the young man discuss the fact that With new social media, there is an opportunity to interact with adults and young people all over the world for meaningful, positive, safe communications, but there is also a potential for harm to children. Parents should become familiar with using technology and social media themselves. (Anmar Yasir is co-founder of Teabreak.pk.)

The Internet is a common place for seeking education and information, but many children have too much freedom with says the blogger at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnTug4b2Nc4. (Munir Usman owns a small software development firm.)

Start a campaign in the schools where teachers, parents and children learn how to become aware of how the Internet can be used says this guy at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6im3PkfMCw. (Talha Izhar owns a software development firm.)

Anyone can participate in this particular discussion of how to protect children in cyberspace by creating a video and uploading it to http://www.youtube.com or http://www.viddler.com and tag it with World Telecom Day, Protecting children in cyberspace and not just on May 17, 2009, but anytime.

And thanks... Jehan very much for showing us the site http://www.wiredkids.org that does a pretty good job of sharing information, awareness and tips on this topic.

All videos will be added in a special playlist on Viddler, Youtube and http://paki.com/worldcommunicationday2009/.

Happy when those NOT like You Get Hurt?

Love thy neighbor as thyself.

We have to stop being happy when those who are not like us ... get hurt.
I remember clearly comments and actions (seen first-hand and via the media) ...

made by those happy and those unhappy about the following events:

911, the Jewish Holocaust, the killing of Muslim families who are in areas of insurgents, hate crimes against homosexuals, and the murder, killing whether accidental or on purpose of anyone different from you or me. Yes, I have heard comments from different people who were happy about EACH of these things!!!!!!!

Thanks to Mark Hewitt at http://blog.telephony.net/ in his post on the Charter of Compassion. Listen to the mix of voices who explain why we rejoice when others get hurt who are not like us and what we can do about this.

Peace to all. Amen. (Use some VoIP today to pass this around.)

Always pushing me to try this and that on the net, Rehan, my business partner, has got me hooked on another cool item, Flock's Blog Editor. I can't wait to show Michael this, my husband, a human performance technologist, who is an avid blogger about coaching athletes.

I'm Sharing a Secret How you Can Influence Others Free

I'm dancing with joy as usual (at least in my head) but more than ever at this moment because I found a super strategy I want to share with you to influence others, publish your knowledge and views, and to collaborate with and learn from the best in your industry.

What's the secret? Blog Friends on Facebook! I added the Facebook application about two months ago, and it is one of my favorites. (Others I like are Scrabulous, Free Conference Calls, Traveler's IQ Challenge, ILike from the same guy who runs Garageband, Truphone, Myphone, FWD's Voicemail and there are more, but I'll stop there.)

Bloggers around the world, those I know and don't know, when you invite friends to add the Blog Friends application, they automatically become "Fans" of your blog and see your posts by preference in their "River." This "River" showcases your posts on their profile box for all their friends to see.

Better still than this, though, people who are "Fans" of *your* Fans will also get your posts in their "River," so you get exponentially more reads of your posts for each Blog Friend you add!

In this short period of time, I've used Blog Friends, I've got 40 "Fans." *Quantity isn't the exciting part here. It's the quality that turns me on. Every "fan" is linked to me because of shared interests. I'm also a fan of their blog.

An effective way to get new "Blog Friends" is to link to the application from your blog, along with your own explanation of why your readers might enjoy Blog Friends.

Here's the link you need: http://apps.facebook.com/blogfriends ... I believe in collaboration EVEN AMONG competitors. My company Super Technologies, Inc.'s DIDXchange is an example that proves this part of our mission.

Influence? You can all have it. I don't want to keep it to myself. ;-)

... Some of the text above I quoted directly from a Blog Friends email update.

*Note: A person can be proud to have the most friends, fans, cars, houses, etc. etc.... no problem, but but but, what is quality of those relationships, those items? Quality is what matters more to me.
